FRISIAN 11 CITIES’ WALK (2023) IX

June 21

Cornelia Parker, a Brittish visual artist:The fierce lions of Workum
For centuries, the coat of arms of Workum has been supported on the scales by two lions. The fountain lions appear naive, more than life-size fighting cats, spraying water at each other. “Look at Workum”, they seem to shout.

The city of Workum (Warkum) got its city rights since 1399.Another Hanze city which has some 5,000 inhabitants.

Activity in the harbor…

Workum is famous for its Jopie Huisman Museum.

Jopie Huisman (18-10-1922 – 29-09-2000) was a self-made man. House- and art painter, story-teller, dealer in rags and metals. He is known for his detailed paintings of all every-day-of-life objects he found interesting. His first painting was of an old pair of pants, adjusted many times.

We walked throughy the “sleeping” hamlet of Ferwoude. Not much has changed here over the years, is my guess. So I think a historical picture will still do. A peaceful road to walk up to the village of Allingawier, after plm. 10 miles.

Next city will be Bolsward (Boalsert), another city in the Hanze-tradition.
